task 1 notes

understand the principles of digital video

applications

uses e.g.. short films, promotional material, film trailers etc

platforms eg. world wide web, dvd, cd, youtube, mobile devices, email attatchments etc

task – write a report

Video interaction timeline

video tape – used by consumers in the early 70’s – evolved from large u-matic tapes to mini DV tapes (Block busters)

DVD – digital versatile disk – developed by multiple technology giant in 1995 to supersede video. quality was SD (standard definition) 480p and 576p

Blu-ray – bought to take over DVD with up to 1080p in resolution

(editing for internet is – progressive  editing for tv is – interlace)

myspace – 2003 bought by news corp in 2005

youtube – developed in 2005. first video – a day at the zoo. Can interact through comment section and sharing it on different madia platforms. For the content creator you can see your target audience, where they are from etc.

vine

netflix – over 44 million members, subscription based, £6 a month, (movies, documentaries, Tv series etc) available in 40 countries, Reed Hastings – co founder

Netflix in an on demand internet service. It was established in 1997 but didnt start the subscription charges until 1999. By 2009 netflix  offered a collection of 100,000 titles on dvd and had surpassed 10 million subscribers. They now make their own movies and tv series ie Orange is the new black

apple tv

vimeo – aimed at professional film makers/ wannabes – vimeo is an anagram of the word movie

platforms – the places where you find apps/software for example –

  • computer and online – netflix, love film, blink box, youtube

I use the computer to interact online and watch tv on-the-go. YouTube is the platform I use the most on a daily basis

  • television – virgin, sky, freest, bt vision, free view, rokubox(like a now tv box but allows you to set up your own t channel so you can be a content creator and if it becomes popular advertising agents pay you for advertising space)
  • gaming console – wii, xbox 360/one, playstation
  • mobile devices – android, windows, iOS

on a computer there are a range of video content players, some are free and some aren’t.

  • flash player
  • VLC player (plays almost every format)
  • windows media player
  • quicktime (for mac mainly)
  • DivX

(research and investigate what file formats play in each)

file formats – mp4, mov, mkv, mvp, flv, swv, avi

  • .mpg (moving pictures experts group)
  • .mp4 (mpeg) – compresses the video to make the file smaller
  • .mov (quicktime movie)
  • .avi (audio video interleave) – televition content creators used to use this but it was an uncompressed media file so the file would be massive.
  • H.264 – content creators use this to export their videos to be used on multiplatform ie youtube, vimeo etc instead of being limited to just one platform
  • .wmv – (windows media video)
  • asf (windows media – advanced system format)
  • .flv (adobe flash)
  • .Swf – (adobe – small web format)
  • .3GP (mobile phone) – used soley just for phones so there is no buffering

mp4,mov,avi- the ones we will use the most

codec – when you’re filming on a camera you can get a compressed video clip or an uncompressed video clip

codec – something can be CODED or DECODED

for example in an everyday use a signal (which is coded) is sent in waves and then the sky box decodes that signal.

also on youtube there are different levels that you can watch a youtube video at – if you play it at 320 then the video is compressed to a smaller size which means the video will play load and play straight away as the file isn’t as big but the quality is very pixelated. But if you chose to play the video at 1080 which is HD then the file is decompressed and the quality is perfect but it takes a lot longer to load as the file size is very big.

Codecs

when you film in mpeg 4 it seperates everything into different files i.e. the audio, visual etc

1080i – interlace (ideal for tv)

1080p – progressive (ideal for online)

jvc cameras use a sony codec – xdcam

whenever you use a sony or panasonic camera you use the codec – avchd to edit

dcvprohd/dvcpo50 – panasonic cameras

canon xf – canon cameras (not dslr)

digital slr – dslr
